OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Sub: Payment of Part of salary in coins.
1. Attention is invited to this Department’s Office Memorandum of even number dated the 30th December, 1985 on the subject mentioned above (copy enclosed).
2. With a view to ascertaining the follow up action in regard to above, all Ministries/ Departments are requested kindly to indicate to this Department the gist of steps taken in this regard. This is essential for effective monitoring of distribution of coins. Acknowledgement of this OM, indicating the action taken, is requested immediately.

OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Sub: Payment of part of salary in coins.
1. To view of the continued shortage of coins, Government have taken various steps to increase the supply of coins. One of the measures is the decision to import 2000 million pieces of coins of denominations of Rupee one, 50 parse and 25 paise. The imported coins have already started arriving and are being distributed through the Reserve Bank and the Nationalised Banks including SBI. Production of indigenous coins in the Mints has also been stepped up.
2. In start with, staff working in Government offices and public sector undertakings are proposed to be issued coins worth about Rs.20 only with their monthly salaries. It is, therefore, requested that instructions may please be issued to the concerned officials in your Ministry/ Department to collect the requisite quantity of coins from the Banks and distribute them to the Staff at the time of disbursement of salaries. The branches of the Nationalised Banks have already been advised to collect coins in sufficient quantity from the issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India. Suitable instructions may also be issued to all, the attached/ subordinate offices and the public sector undertakings under the administrative control of the Ministries/ Departments.
