Switchmen: RBE No.251/1986 – Relaxation of Qualifications

Sub: Relaxation of qualifications for promotion of Switchmen.

1. Reference instructions contained in para 2 of this Ministry’s letter of even number dated 30.12.1985, (RBE No.338/1985) on the above subject.

In para 2 (i) of this Ministry’s letter ibid, it has been inter-alia laid down that 50% of the vacancies in the grade of Switchmen will be filled by staff having 6th Standard qualification from amongst the normal promotional categories of Levermen/ Cabinmen. In the meeting of the Departmental Council under the JCM held on 10/11.03.1986 a demand was made that the category of Pointsmen also may be included in the list of eligible categories for promotion as Switchmen against this 50% quota. The Ministry of Railways have considered the demand and decided that the category of Pointsmen also may be included along with Levermen/ Cabinmen in the list of eligible categories for promotion as Switchmen against the first 50% quota.

The Ministry of Railways have also decided that in case any difficulty is experienced in filling up the second 50% quota as stipulated in para 2(i) of this Ministry’s letter referred to above for want of Matriculate Staff of Operating Department with five years’ service, the General Managers may relax the condition of five years service stipulated therein to two years.
