RBE No. 191/2008: Apprentices – Upper Age limit

Sub: Apprentices Act, 1961 – Upper age limit for selecting candidates for training.
1. A demand has been raised by AIRF vide item No.9/2007 for increasing the maximum age limit for engagement of Act Apprentices in view of the minimum essential educational qualification being raised from class 8th pass to class 10th pass.
2. The matter has been considered by the Board and it has been decided that maximum age limit may be raised by 2 years for those trades in which educational qualification has been raised from 8th pass to 10th pass as per Annexure I attached herewith, with age relaxation as applicable in case of SC/ST candidates.
3. Further, the reservation of 27% was extended to candidates belonging to OBCs vide Board’s letter No.E(MPP)2002/6/10, dated 31.12.2002 (RBE No. 234/2002) with the personal approval of Hon’ble Minister of Railways. Ministry of Labour have also amended the Apprentices Act, 1961 making a provision of reservation of training places for OBCs in designated trades which has been circulated under Board’s letter No.E(MPP)2006/6/11, dated 23.07.2008 (RBE No. 87/2008). In view of this, relaxation in age by three years is also applicable to OBCs.
4. Accordingly, para 8 of Master Circular No.8/2002 issued under Board’s letter of even number dated 22.07.2002 (RBE No. 119/2007) may be modified to read as under:-
“8. Age for engagement of Act Apprentices for training on Railways:-
(i) ITI candidates should have completed 15 years of age and should not have completed 24 years of age.
(ii) Non-ITI candidates should have completed 15 years of age and should not have completed 22 years of age.
(iii) The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years and 3 years in the cases of SCs/STs and OBCs respectively.
