RBE No. 01/1986: Staff Cars

Sub: Vehicles for use as staff cars on Railways.

1. Reference instructions contained in Board’s letter No.E(G)83 AL4-13, date 15.10.1984 on the subject noted above, wherein it had, inter alia been laid down that Contessa Cars should not be purchased for use as staff cars on the Railways until further orders and that the proposals for procurement of staff cars on additional/ replacement account should be formulated, as and when necessary, only for Ambassador/ Fiat cars.
2. Since there is the ban imposed by the Ministry of Finance on purchase of Contessa Cars for use in the Government Departments, it is reiterated that Contessa Cars should in no case be allowed to be purchased. It has, however, been decided by the Board, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, that procurement of Maruti Vans/ Gypsy for use as staff cars on the Railways, in addition to Ambassador/ Fiat Cars, may also be considered for which necessary quota has been provided by the Government. All such proposals are, however, subject to the detailed examination by the Railway Administration under the economy instructions issued by the Board from time to time, following the procedure also laid down in this respect.
3. The procedure for procurement of Maruti Vans/ Gypsy will be intimated in due course on receipt of the details from the Ministry of Industries.
4. This issues with the concurrence of the Furnace Directorate of the Department of Railways (Railway Board).
