No.E(P&A)I-86 CPC LE-7, dated 03.07.1986

Sub: Grant of maternity leave to unmarried female Railway servants.

1.     Reference provisions contained in Rules 2266 and 2267 R-II and para 10 of this Department’s letter No.E(P&A)I-76 CPC LE-3, of 11.03.1977. A question has been raised regarding admissibility of maternity leave to unmarried female government servants.

2.     The matter has been considered by the government and it is clarified that since the rules do not specifically refer to the marital status of the female Railway servant and the word ‘married’ is not prefixed to the word ‘female’, maternity leave as admissible may be granted to unmarried female Railway servants, subject to the conditions laid down in Rules 2266 and 2267-R.II and this Department’s letter of 11.03.1977 referred to above, as amended from time to time, and also keeping in view the welfare of the mother and the child.

3.     This issues with the concurrence of the Finance Directorate of the Department of Railways and has the approval of the President.
