RBE No. 117/1985: Apprentice Mechanics – Recruitment

Sub: Recruitment of Apprentice Mechanics in the Mechanical and Electrical Departments.

1. As the Railway Administration are aware, the qualification prescribed for recruitment of Apprentice Mechanics against post of Chargemen in scale Rs.425-700 (RS) in the Electrical and Mechanical Deptt. is a Diploma in the respective discipline. In this connection attention is invited to this Ministry’s letter No.E(NG)II/RR1/51, dated 11.08.1972.

2. The Ministry of Railways have been considering for some time past suggestions made to them that Diploma in Electronics also should be one of the prescribed qualifications for this recruitment. Having regard to the progressive sophistication in Railway assets and modernization in railway operations, e.g. operation of CNC mechanic, electronic circuit in diesel locos, etc.

3. Having considered the suggestion, the Ministry of Railways have decided that Diploma in Electronics from a recognized institution will also be one of the prescribed qualification for recruitment of Apprentice Mechanics in the Electrical and Mechanical Departments. In all indents to be placed on the Railway Recruitment Boards in future, this qualification should be specified, if necessary. Railways may specify in such indents the number of posts for which they require candidates with diploma qualification Electronics. The RRBs also are being hereby advised to include this qualification in all employment notices which are still to be notified by them against indents for these categories already placed on them. Respective Railway Administrations may also advise the Railway Recruitment Boards suitably in this regard.
